The Scottsboro Boys Museum and Cultural Center is located a few blocks from the Scottsboro town square and the courthouse where the Scottsboro Boys first stood trial. It is also a block from one of Alabama's biggest tourist attractions, the Unclaimed Baggage Center, which receives one million visitors annually and is the country's largest final stop for lost luggage.

Exhibits and Programs

The Museum's collection includes flyers, stamps and other items distributed across the nation and the world in the 1930s in order to draw attention to the Scottsboro Boys' plight.

The museum opened in February 2010 with a growing collection of memorabilia including locally compiled scrapbooks not previously viewed by Scottsboro scholars. Museum founder Sheila Washington collected items to display in the museum for ten years before the institution opened. Current (June 2010) exhibits include: a large metal table from the "bull pen," the Scottsboro Boys' cell in the Jackson County Jail; a jury chair used in the Scottsboro trials; stamps sold in the 1930s to raise funds for the boys' defense; 1930s newspaper articles; and photos of the trials, including many hidden from public view for decades.

Planned exhibits and programs include interpretive displays, historic video and audio clips related to the Scottsboro Boys Trials, tours, public lectures and educational activities tied to state curriculum standards for particular grade levels.

The Center also provides race relations/equal opportunity diversity training to businesses and corporations for a donation. Educators and a race relations/equal opportunity specialist are on staff. Please call (256) 244-1310 to learn about this service.
